How Funny...

Isn't it funny when an individual decides to become our next 24 hour expert?

I share this story with you in the true spirit of never going there. I must say, I am indeed encouraged by anyone wishing to check MSN's, Top Search stats and decide to chase what they believe to be a golden money making opportunity.

Now, not saying that this lady did just that, but one might evidently arrive at that conclusion!

I am telling you this story as Tim "Gonzo" Gordon told it to me.

Tim received an email from a lady who claimed to have the next best podcast training camp in her midst. She (or her email blaster) unsolicitedly popped into Tim's email inbox. Tim, (a.k.a. Mr. Research), hopped on his mouse and arrived at her site. Upon arrival, Tim noticed this lady wasn't even podcasting at all. I mean, she did have a library of listenable and downloadable audio files (mp3's), but NO subscriber feed. Oops!

You see, in order for a podcast (be it audio and/or video) to be a true podcast, the podcaster (producer) must provide the ability for people (subscribers) to dynamically (autonomously) pull the audio and/or video feed into the media player of choice. Her site (this self-proclaimed podcast coach) had NO such availability. Therefore, NO feed, NO podcast!

Naturally, Tim being the Internet's, "Handy Helper", he shot her a very helpful and thoughtful email explaining her misconceptions with the term, "podcasting." Naturally, she responded (certainly embarrassed, but NOT willing to acquiest with her disinclined attitute) with sheer disagreement. (We catalog this less than favorable response as, "Goof #2.)

Ultimately, after numerous "Tim and the Podcast Lady" email volleys (including Tim copying and pasting the entire "Podcast Wiki" back at her), she finally caved in after suffering from the proverbial, "Don't confuse me with the facts, I have my mind made up" hardlined position.

The Marketing Moral of this story...

Although, and perhaps obvious, the Podcast Lady (as we are referring to her in this Hot Topic) would have been better served to have done her homework long before taking on the title. In as much as we are encouraged by her "Go For It" bent, she clearly was NOT fully prepared to open her doors for business.

There's an old saying that goes something like this...

"Do something good and the client will tell 10 friends. Screw it up and they are likely to tell a thousand!"

Here now are a few tips to help you maintain your integrity through your entire sale's process and beyond:

  • Do your research (due diligence) before steping out in the light.
  • Know your product inside and out. If you do NOT know how it works, how can you efficiently explain it to your audience?
  • Shop your competition. Discover who is doing what and how they may be doing it!
  • Patiently build your image (brand). Rome wasn't built in day. Spend a season in test mode before going stellar.
  • Seek expert advice. Never roll out a product or service without at least a dozen sets of eyeballs looking at your offering first.
