Although there are a few highly-rated podcasts with more than 100,000 listeners/viewers, most podcasts have far smaller audiences, highly-focused on niche interests.
According to long-tail theory, these targeted audiences should be especially valuable to advertisers and marketers. Although the audiences are small, each listener or viewer is very interested in the subject, and the audiences should therefore carry commensurately higher ad pricing.

LED Backlit Displays
For over a year, LED-backlit displays have made it to a limited number of laptop models, usually those more expensive desktop replacements 15” inches and under, and ultra-portables like the Sony TZ and most recently the Apple MacBook Air. Research firm iSupply is now ready to state the obvious, LEDs are set to become the next big thing on mobile displays.
With an apparent stagnation on battery-related technological advances, multiple efforts from chip makers have been made to increase power at little or no cost of performance, and results have been quite decent so far. After all, we can now run a speedy dual-core Intel CPU on our laptops without being punished as harshly as we did on the days of the awful Pentium 4 mobile.

How Are YOU Shopping For Mother’s Day?
The majority of consumers shopping for Mother’s Day gifts will head to specialty stores (35.0%), discount stores (25.7%) and department stores (28.8%). Others will shop at specialty clothing stores (6.6%), online (18.3%) and through catalogs (3.4%).
According to the National Retail Foundation’s 2008 Mother’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, consumers will spend an average of $138.63 this year, compared to $139.14 last year. Total consumer spending is expected to reach $15.8 billion.
Of the 84.2% of consumers celebrating Mother’s Day, the majority will invest in one major present, instead of several smaller ones.

Hollywood Producer Set to Make Shows for Xbox
LOS ANGELES — Microsoft, seeking to expand offerings on its Xbox 360 console, has reached an agreement with a company headed by Peter Safran, the veteran Hollywood producer and talent manager, to produce original shows for distribution on the system.
Through his Safran Company, Mr. Safran represents clients like the actor and producer Sean Combs (“Monster’s Ball”), the actor and writer Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and the filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (“Epic Movie”). Mr. Safran founded the company in 2006 after leaving Brillstein-Grey Management.

NAA Reveals Biggest Ad Revenue Plunge in More Than 50 Years

NEW YORK The newspaper industry has experienced the worst drop in advertising revenue in more than 50 years.
According to new data released by the Newspaper Association of America, total print advertising revenue in 2007 plunged 9.4% to $42 billion compared to 2006—the most severe percent decline since the association started measuring advertising expenditures in 1950.
The drop-off points to an economic slowdown on top of the secular challenges faced by the industry. The second worst decline in advertising revenue occurred in 2001 when it fell 9.0%.
Total advertising revenue in 2007—including online revenue—decreased 7.9% to $45.3 billion compared to the prior year.
There are signs that online revenue is beginning to slow as well.

YouTube Reveals Video Analytics Tool for All Users
Whether a YouTube video has 10 views or 10,000,000, people always want to know the same thing: who’s watching this? Where do viewers come from? How did they find my video?
Finally, we have some answers. A couple weeks ago YouTube released YouTube Insight, a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site. For example, uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time. You can also delve deeper into the lifecycle of your videos, like how long it takes for a video to become popular, and what happens to video views as popularity peaks.
How does this help you? Well, using these metrics, you can increase your videos’ view counts and improve your popularity on the site. For instance, you might learn that your videos are most popular on Wednesdays, that you have a huge following in Spain, or that new videos that play off previous content become more popular more quickly. With this information, you can concentrate on creating compelling new content that appeals to your target audiences, and post these videos on days you know these viewers are on the site. (Maybe even post your next video in Spanish?) And for those of you who are also partners, the more popular a video is, the more advertising revenue it can generate.

AT&T First to Introduce Microsoft Surface in Retail Stores
LAS VEGAS — April 1, 2008 — AT&T (NYSE: T) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) today announced a collaborative alliance that will transform the way consumers shop for mobile devices. AT&T will become the first company in the world to bring Microsoft Surface to life in a retail environment, giving customers the ability to explore their mobile worlds using touch and device recognition technology. Microsoft Surface is the first commercially available surface computer from Microsoft. Beginning April 17, customers can experience Microsoft Surface in select AT&T retail locations, including stores in New York City, Atlanta, San Antonio and San Francisco. Based on the success and learning from these initial pilot deployments, plans for further expansion across AT&T’s 2,200 U.S. retail stores will be determined.
Microsoft Surface is a 30-inch table-like display that gives individuals or multiple people the opportunity to interact with devices and content in a way that feels familiar — by using touch, gestures and placement of devices on the display. In essence, it’s a surface come to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more.

Analysts: US consumers like HDTVs better than HD programming

Fully 41 percent of TV owners in the US now possess a high definition TV, yet only 56 percent of those same consumers subscribe to an HD programming package, according to a new survey by ABI Research.
Together with other analysts’ statistics, ABI’s findings about HDTV ownership seems to indicate that interest in HD is finally on the rise in the United States. In research released last summer, for example, In-Stat discovered that interest in HD had actually fallen over the previous year among US consumers, while increasing in other countries, particularly France and South Korea.
But in a survey unveiled just before CES 2008 last January, the Consumer Electronics Association found a “big screen TV” took third place—just after “computer” and “peace and happiness”—among items that parents would like to receive as holiday items. The previous year, “big screen TV” landed in only the eleventh spot on the same question in the same survey.

New Entry in Space Tourism Industry
Calif. Aerospace Company Unveils New Rocket for Space Tourism
By JOHN ANTCZAK Associated Press Writer
A California aerospace company plans to enter the space tourism industry with a two-seat rocket ship capable of suborbital flights to altitudes more than 37 miles above the Earth.
The Lynx, about the size of a small private plane, is expected to begin flying in 2010, according to developer Xcor Aerospace, which planned to release details of the design at a news conference Wednesday.
The company also said that, pending the outcome of negotiations, the Air Force Research Laboratory has awarded it a research contract to develop and test features of the Lynx. No details were released.
